German fixed network operator Versatel has announced that the total length of its fibre-optic infrastructure has increased to around 52,000km over the past year, helping it to benefit from increased demand for broadband internet services. The company said the network has recently been boosted by mobile backhaul projects and the acquisition of city network KielNet in September last year. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Versatel increased the length of its fibre-optic infrastructure from approximately 45,000km to 50,000km in 2011, following the rollout of a number of direct fibre networks during that year.
