Deutsche Telekom (DT), which provides fixed line and mobile services in its domestic market under the brand name Telekom Deutschland, has announced that it will be introducing monthly data caps for new fixed broadband customers next month, in response to surging consumer demand for data. From 2 May, a monthly data allowance of 75GB will apply for ‘Call & Surf’ plans with a download connection speed of up to 16Mbps, 200GB for speeds of up to 50Mbps, 300GB for up to 100Mbps and 400GB for packages with a connection of up to 200Mbps. If this volume limit is exceeded, then the data rate will automatically drop to 384kbps for the rest of the month, although users would then be able to purchase an add-on allowing them to continue surfing at higher speeds. According to the Bonn-based telco, on average its customers currently use between 15GB and 20GB of data per month.
