Viettel introduces mobile services under Telmor brand

17 Apr 2013

Vietnamese military-owned telecoms group Viettel began offering mobile services in Timor-Leste earlier this month under the brand Telmor, according to local press reports. The operator competes with Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin, operating as Telkomcel), which launched commercial mobile services earlier this year, and incumbent Timor Telecom. Telin and Viettel were announced as the winners of Timor-Leste’s two new telecommunications licences in July 2012, notes TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database. Until that date, the sole licensee was Portugal Telecom subsidiary Timor Telecom, which won a tender to construct the country’s telecoms infrastructure from scratch in July 2002.
