Telefonica and Alca-Lu trial ‘flexible’ 100Gbps, 200Gbps, 400Gbps networking

Telefonica and Alcatel-Lucent have completed a field trial of ‘flexible optical networking’ technology in Spain which they claim demonstrated the first live network delivering 100Gbps, 200Gbps and 400Gbps services simultaneously. The new network configuration based on ‘photonic mesh technology’ will allow Telefonica to ‘operate at different combinations of line rate, reach, and spectrum width to provide the best balance between network performance and resource usage’, while improving network resilience, allowing it to better manage the impact of outages or failures by diverting capacity to where it is needed in the network, according to Alcatel-Lucent.
