So-Net launches world’s fastest residential fibre broadband

17 Apr 2013

Japanese Internet service provider (ISP) So-Net has launched a commercial residential fibre broadband service with 2Gbps download speed and 1Gbps uplink in Tokyo and six surrounding districts – Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Kanagawa and Saitama. The company, which is owned by Sony, is offering the network connection for JPY4, 980 (USD51) per month on a two-year contract (contrasted in press reports with Google’s highly publicised USD70 per month 1Gbps fibre package in the US). So-net is currently waving the installation fee of JPY52,500 for customers who apply for the service online.
