Myanmar’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) has announced that twelve applicants have been pre-qualified to submit bids for two nationwide telecoms licences. The companies approved to take part in the beauty contest competition are:

Bharti Airtel

Axiata

Digicel

Millicom International Cellular (MIC)

Qatar Telecom (Qtel/Ooredoo)

Telenor

Viettel

France Telecom-Orange and Marubeni

Vodafone and China Mobile

MTN Consortium (consisting of MTN Dubai, M1 Telecom and Amara Communications)

KDDI, Sumitomo, Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Development Corporation (MICTDC) and A1 Construction

Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel), KBZ and Myanmar Telephone Company (M-Tel).

The above twelve groups continue to the final stage of the award process and have until 3 June 2013 to submit their applications to the Telecommunications Operator Tender Evaluation and Selection Committee. The committee expects to announce the winners of the competition by 27 June.

As previously noted by CommsUpdate, MCIT received more than 90 expressions of interest (EoI) to take part in the competition before selecting 23 for shortlisting last week. Having eliminated a further eleven from the process, Egypt’s Orascom and China Telecom were amongst the players left on the cutting room floor.
