Sentech to return 2.6GHz, 3.5GHz spectrum to ICASA

11 Apr 2013

According to TechCentral, state-owned broadcasting signal distributor Sentech has decided to return its full allocation of spectrum in the 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz bands. Citing comments from CEO Setumo Mohapi, the website indicates that Sentech intends to relinquish a 50MHz block in the 2.6GHz band as well as a 14MHz block in the 3.5GHz range. The first band is highly sought after by domestic mobile operators who hope to use it to support urban Long Term Evolution (LTE) rollouts. The frequencies have not been used since November 2009 when Sentech shut down its national ‘MyWireless’ WiMAX network due to ‘technological difficulties’.
