Liquid Telecom Group is shutting down Kenyan internet service provider (ISP) Swift Global, AllAfrica.com reports. The unit was included in Liquid’s recent acquisition of Altech’s assets in East Africa, and the company’s 1,050 subscribers will be migrated to sister company Kenya Data Networks (KDN) in due course. Founded in 1995, Swift Global was among Kenya’s so-called ‘first wave’ of ISPs.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, South Africa-based Altech acquired a 51% stake in KDN plus controlling stakes in sister companies Infocom (Uganda) and Swift Global for a total of USD75 million in March 2008. In January 2013 Altech’s 60.8% stake in KDN was effectively transferred to Mauritius-headquartered Liquid Telecom Group, following the latter’s deal to acquire Altech’s east African assets.
