According to The Standard newspaper, broadband provider Powertel is in discussions with telecoms regulator POTRAZ as it seeks to renew the company’s A class licence, which is due to expire in 2014. ‘POTRAZ has announced an intention to issue a converged licence but we have been in discussions and communication with them to understand the direction that they are taking. They are in the process of defining the full context of the licence,’ said Powertel board chairman Francis Chirumuuta. Chirumuuta also said the company was aiming to establish CDMA-based services. To date the company has rolled out 5,000km of fibre, helping to link Zimbabwe through Botswana and Mozambique gateways to submarine cables.
