Privately owned mobile operator Spice Nepal Private (Ncell) has reacted swiftly to distance itself from recent press rumours linking it with a bid to acquire fellow Nepalese telco Nepal Satellite Telecom (NST), saying it has no intention to do so. In a statement issued at the weekend, Ncell confirmed it has no plans to take over NST or to merge the two operator’s networks. ‘Operational responsibility of NST lies with its own management and not with Ncell,’ the statement read.
However, Ncell did admit that its majority shareholder TeliaSonera is in talks with NST’s owners as part of a plan to consider potential consolidation opportunities, including TeliaSonera making some form of investment in NST. No details were given of the status of negotiations, with both parties only confirming their willingness to observe employee rights and other contractual obligations as per local law.
