Roaming in the gloaming: BT to deploy fibre in the Scottish Highlands

27 Mar 2013

BT Group plans to spearhead total investment of GBP146 million (USD221.5 million) to help roll out fibre-optic broadband services in Scotland, as part of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) scheme. Upon completion, which is slated for 2016 and includes public sector investment to the tune of GBP126.4 million, around 84% of homes and businesses in the region will have access to fibre broadband, it says. The majority of the monies will be provided by the Scottish Government broadband fund, with BT contributing GBP19.4 million and the HIE, GBP12 million.
