Mobile operator Orange Armenia has revealed plans to deploy a fibre-optic backbone network to cater for a surge in demand for mobile broadband services. The upgraded infrastructure is based on French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent’s optical coherent technology and will provide a significant improvement in terms of both transmission speed and capacity on the backbone, it said in a press release. As well as supporting the delivery of high-bandwidth services such as high-definition (HD) video and mobile gaming on Orange Armenia’s 3G network, the upgrade also strengthens the data link between Armenia and Georgia, an important regional gateway to the global internet.
