Smart reports 132% growth on mobile broadband drive

Online news portal Philstar.com reports that Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) mobile unit Smart Communications grew its post-paid broadband business by 132% last year, driven by a surge in demand for mobile devices, particularly tablets. The upsurge resulted in the company reporting its highest growth numbers ever for Smart Bro services, it said, with division head Lloyd Manaloto attributing its success to its Smart Bro ‘FlexiSurf’ line of monthly contract plans. ‘The public’s reception to FlexiSurf has just been unbelievable – we really hit a sweet spot,’ Manaloto reportedly said. SmartBro FlexiSurf now accounts for 40% of Smart Bro’s total activations, he added.

Smart launched its FlexiSurf mobile broadband tariffs in May 2012, with the entry level Smart Bro FlexiSurf Pocket Wi-Fi Plan costing PHP599 (USD14.8) per month. In 2013 the Smart official says he hopes the continued rollout of Long Term Evolution (LTE) services will drive further mobile broadband growth. The operator’s Smart LTE Plan 3500, Plan 1749 and Plan 1299 are capable of speeds of up to 42Mbps, and are available in 46 cities and 69 municipalities nationwide.
