International telecoms group Millicom International Cellular (MIC), which provides wireless and broadband services throughout Africa and Latin America under the Tigo brand, has announced plans to ink further mobile infrastructure sharing deals in Africa. TMT Finance quotes the group’s CEO and President Hans Holger Albrecht as saying: ‘We want to create synergies where we can, and towercos [are] a good example of that … We want to invest more in Africa – and doing so is less cost intensive now because we use existing towers. It’s a favourable market…. the more operators within a towerco, the better.’ To date, MIC has signed leaseback deals with towercos in Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, MIC is looking to trim some USD100 million in operating expenses over the next five years, whilst increasing revenues from 3G and 4G services by adding 18 million new data users over the same timeframe.
