AIS brings forward 2100MHz 3G launch date to April

7 Mar 2013

Thailand’s largest cellco by users Advanced Info Service (AIS) has set a launch date of April for commercial 2100MHz 3G services, earlier than its previous announcement that it would launch the network in May. According to its previous statements, in its initial phase AIS’s 2100MHz network will cover 50% of the population, rising to 80% in 2014. Since being issued with their 2100MHz licences in December 2012, the country’s three nationwide private sector mobile operators have scrambled to get commercial services rolled out by the second quarter of 2013, with True Corp stealing the limelight by announcing that it will launch the country’s first commercial 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network using its 2100MHz spectrum in April, over a 300 base station system in central Bangkok. Meanwhile DTAC has contracted Ericsson to roll out its 3G 2100MHz network set for launch in 2Q13.
