Wataniya taps Huawei for 4G deployment

1 Mar 2013

Wataniya Telecom, Kuwait’s second largest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, has announced that it has enlisted Chinese telecoms vendor Huawei to upgrade its nationwide 2G and 3G networks, as well as deploying 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology for the carrier. The cellco has described the tie-up with Huawei as ‘the largest of its kind in the history of Wataniya Telecom’, and includes agreements relating to a series of products as well as managed services.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Wataniya expects to launch commercial LTE services in the first half of 2013. Both of Wataniya’s domestic wireless rivals – Zain and Viva – have already introduced commercial 4G-based offerings. In December 2012 Wataniya invited its entire user base to experience its LTE network on a trial basis, and all feedback has been incorporated into the network’s ‘modernisation plan’.
