Vodafone New Zealand is expected to announce the launch of its first 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile services this week, a company spokeswoman has hinted. Technology website Stuff.co.nz reports that the company’s hand has been forced after the emergence of widespread rumours on social networking site Twitter which have suggested that a large number of base stations have been upgraded to support 4G technology. The company is now expected to make a formal announcement on Thursday morning.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, earlier this month chief rival Telecom Mobile invited a small number of customers in Wellington and Auckland to participate in trials of its own in-deployment LTE network. Parent company Telecom New Zealand revealed that it plans to launch commercial 4G services before the end of 2013, and hopes to roll out the technology gradually, ‘as demand warrants’.
