True confirms April LTE launch date

25 Feb 2013

Confirming previous reports, Thailand’s True Corp has fixed a target date of April 2013 to launch the country’s first commercial 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile service using its 2100MHz licence won at auction last October. True Corp’s CEO Suphachai Chearavanont said that an initial LTE launch would involve 300 4G base stations in central Bangkok, under a plan to expand to 15 major cities by the end of the year via 2,000 base stations. Simultaneously, the group will continue to expand its ‘True Move H’ 850MHz 3G W-CDMA/HSPA network to span 13,000 base stations this year under its partnership contract with state-owned CAT Telecom, while also rolling out 5,000 3G 2100MHz base stations by the end of the year under its new full operating licence, Mr Suphachai confirmed. Rivals AIS and DTAC will launch commercial 3G-only services in Q2 2013 under their respective 2100MHz full operating licences.
