Mobile giant Vimpelcom will launch 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services in six Russian cities this year Dow Jones Newswires writes, citing the head of Vimpelcom’s Russian unit Anton Kudryashov. The cellco, which operates under the ‘Beeline’ brand will launch LTE in Moscow as well as five other cities where demand for 4G is high, Kudryashov said. Vimpelcom is also awaiting regulatory approval to roll out 4G in twelve regions including Stavropol, Astrakhan, Kaliningrad, Leningrad and Novgorod. Vimpelcom is expecting the 4G market to become more popular within the next two years, but is limiting its spending on LTE for the moment. Instead, the operator intends to increase spending on third-generation networks in 2013, amidst plans to double the number of 3G sites in Moscow and increase the company’s total 3G footprint by 30%.
