Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) has confirmed that it has launched trials of LTE technology in Sydney. The operator has revealed that, using 10MHz of 1800MHz spectrum in the suburbs of Alexandria, Bronte and Radwick, its network teams have been testing data speeds and MMS services, while also ensuring that the handover for voice calls to the nearest network is seamless. It noted that in the initial tests it recorded download speeds of between 60Mbps to 67Mbps, while uploads of 25Mbps-30Mbps were also registered. In terms of its commercial expectations, VHA has said that when it does launch LTE commercially it expects to offer typical downlink rates of between 2Mbps and 40Mbps in 4G areas for those connecting with a ‘category 3’ device, such as the iPhone 5 or Nokia 820. Further, the cellco has confirmed that it will utilise 20MHz of bandwidth in the 1800MHz range when it does introduce LTE for consumers.
