Progress reported for French Guiana fibre link

19 Feb 2013

French Guiana’s long-awaited cross-border fibre-optic link to Brazil is expected to be up and running by the end of March 2013, according to Dom-Tom ADSL, a website focusing on telecoms activities in the French overseas territories. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, the fibre link will connect the Brazilian border town of Oiapoque with Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana; in Cayenne the 200km link will connect with a network belonging to local WiMAX operator Guyacom. A representative for the group, Christine Chung, noted that ‘studies and initial tests have already been carried out, and the installation of the fibre should start at the end of March 2013’.
