Customer growth and higher data ARPU boost revenues for Telus in 4Q12

Canadian telco Telus Communications has revealed that turnover for the last three months of 2012 increased by 6% to CAD2. 85 billion (USD2.87 billion), up from CAD2.69 billion for the same period a year earlier. Consolidated revenueswere boosted by an 8% year-on-year increase in wireless revenues, with subscriber growth and increased data average revenue per user (ARPU) as drivers for the growth. However, while Telus recorded a 13% y-o-y increase in wireline data revenue for the fourth quarter of 2012, consolidated turnover from its fixed services overall only rose by 4.1%, with local and long-distance revenues falling by 4.3% and 10.4% respectively. EBITDA for 4Q12 stood at CAD947 million, representing an 8.4% increase compared with 4Q11, while net income for the period under review was CAD291 million, up 22.8% from CAD237 million in the last three months of 2011.

Looking ahead, Telus has issued guidance for the coming financial year, revealing that it expects to generate revenues between CAD11.4 billion and CAD11.6 billion, while it is targeting EBITDA and capital expenditures of CAD3.95 billion-CAD4.15 billion and CAD1.95 billion respectively.

Total subscriber connections increased by 385,000 in the year to end-2012, with Telus registering customer growth of 4.5%, 33% and 5.7% in its mobile voice, pay-TV and internet subscriber bases. As at 31 December 2012 the operator had 7.67 million mobile accesses on its books, up from 7.34 million a year earlier, with post-paid subscribers accounting for 85.3% of that total, up from 83.5% at end-2011. In the broadband sector Telus saw customer numbers climb by 6.8% to reach 1.33 million, more than offsetting a 25% decline in the number of dial-up users, which fell to just 33,000 at end-2012. Fixed network access lines fell to 3.41 million at end-2012, down from 3.59 million at December 2011.
