TIM Brasil books 16.3% rise in Q4 profit

Brazilian mobile operator TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil), a unit of Telecom Italia, reported net profits of BRL462.6 million (USD233.2 million) for the three months ended 31 December 2012, up 16.3% from the BRL397.8 million booked in the same period a year ago. In a securities filing, the carrier said that net revenue (sales minus sales taxes) increased by 6.7% year-on-year to BRL5.03 billion in the period under review, in line with expectations – although also the smallest quarterly increase booked in nearly two years. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 8.2% y-o-y to BRL1.43 billion, beating analyst expectations of EBITDA of BRL1.37 billion in a Reuters survey. The EBITDA margin remained steady at 28%, it said.
