Rwanda introduces mandatory SIM registration

5 Feb 2013

Rwanda has introduced mandatory SIM card registration as an anti-crime measure, according to Jean Phillibert Nsengimana, Rwanda’s Youth and ICT Minister. AllAfrica.com reports that the registration period opened yesterday and will run until 31 July this year. ‘Our telephones have become a part of our identity,’ said Hodge Semaluka, executive secretary for the East African Communications Organisation. ‘This phenomenon has…presented the government with a new challenge: cyber security.’ Rwanda joins neighbours Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya in adopting mandatory SIM card registration, with Burundi now the sole country in East Africa without it.
