AM signs deal with Alca-Lu for AMX-1 cable

1 Feb 2013

America Movil (AM) has signed a contract with Alcatel-Lucent for a new submarine cable, AMX-1, linking Latin America and the United States. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) gave conditional approval for the submarine cable system in October 2012. The 100G cable will be 17,500km long and will connect seven countries: United States (at Miami and Jacksonville, Florida), Colombia (Barranquilla and Cartagena), Brazil (Fortaleza, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro), Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata), Mexico (Cancun), Puerto Rico (San Juan) and Guatemala (Puerto Barrios). The cable will enable America Movil to provide international connectivity to its subsidiaries, and commercial operation is planned to start in late 2013.
