Telcos required to stop ‘spam’ calls

Costa Rican operators may now be required to block unrequested sales calls, the Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) has announced. Customers that do not wish to receive such communications may contact their provider to have them stopped. The operator will then issue a warning to the sender before proceeding to block the number. In a statement, Sutel said that the measures should mean that only those subscribers that have explicitly requested such sale calls should be receiving them. Telcos that do not comply with the measures to protect the privacy of their customers will risk incurring a fine of up to 1% of gross annual revenues.
