Farice signs DANICE upgrade deal

16 Jan 2013

Farice, a provider of international capacity from Iceland to mainland Europe, has signed a deal with Ciena Corporation to upgrade the 2,295km DANICE submarine cable system which connects Iceland with Denmark. The upgrade is due to become operational in early 2013, and will use Ciena’s 40Gbps coherent optical transport technology to increase the total capacity of the submarine cable; later in the year a further upgrade to 100Gbps is planned. Following the upgrade, DANICE will consist of four fibre pairs giving a maximum capacity of 35.2Tbps in order to provide sufficient bandwidth to support Iceland’s rapidly growing data centre industry.
