China proposes MVNO licensing

9 Jan 2013

Chinese telecoms regulator the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has proposed a two-year trial allowing private companies to offer virtual wireless services, Bloomberg reports. The MIIT is seeking public feedback on the suggested introduction of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) until 6 February. As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, China’s wireless market is home to just three operators – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom – all of which are majority controlled by the state. Proposals to open the segment to private investment have been bandied around for several years, though no solid action has yet been taken.
