Minister: Rostelecom privatisation likely in 2015

21 Dec 2012

The long-expected privatisation of Russia’s state-controlled telecoms operator Rostelecom will be possible from 2015, communications minister Nikolai Nikiforov has revealed to Reuters, although the telco continues to face serious management problems. Since a government reshuffle prompted by the presidential election this spring, Rostelecom’s management has regularly come under fire regarding its investment programme, but Nikiforov has stressed that the government should not interfere with Rostelecom’s ‘operating activity’.

Complicating matters further, the homes of Rostelecom CEO Alexander Provotorov and minority shareholder Konstantin Malofeev were recently searched as part of a fraud probe, fuelling speculation Provotorov may be ousted from his position. Dmitry Strashnov, who this week stepped down as the CEO of Tele2 Russia, has been named as a likely candidate to take over at Rostelecom.
