Costa Rican telecoms regulator Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) has invited bids for the first universal service project to be backed by the National Telecommunications Fund (Fonatel). The project will see the successful bidder deploy fixed telecommunications services to seven villages in Siquirres canton, in Limon province, though the main aim of the deployment is to provide internet access to the nine schools in the area. A maximum grant of USD311,678 is available to the successful bidder. The tender closes 8 February 2013 and Fonatel is expected to begin working on drafting proposals for a second project within the first three months of 2013. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that under Fonatel’s current schedule, work on the first project will begin in 2013 and will be completed during 2014 with at least one project completed each year thereafter.
