Indosat selects Alca-Lu for mobile broadband boost

19 Dec 2012

Indonesian mobile operator PT Indosat has selected French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent to significantly boost the capacity of data connections on its networks to support growth in mobile broadband services. The contract will both increase the cellco’s readiness to provide 3G cellular-based offerings as well as supporting Indosat’s phased evolution to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, it said. The carrier is experiencing a surge in demand for high speed mobile access as a result of the popularity of internet, video and social networking applications on handsets and devices. To meet burgeoning demand, the cellco is upgrading its data transport and mobile backhaul infrastructure across Indonesia with Internet Protocol/Multiprotocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) and microwave packet transport technology supplied by the equipment maker. Under the contract, Alca-Lu is supplying Indosat with a comprehensive IP/MPLS based carrier Ethernet solution which includes its 7750 service router, 7705 service aggregation router (SAR), and 5620 service aware manager, as well as its 9500 microwave packet radio platform. The vendor, working in partnership with Datacomm, will also provide project management, consulting and design, integration services, installation, deployment and maintenance, under the contract.
