NTA confirms plans to utilise RTDF fibre-optic project

17 Dec 2012

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has confirmed it will use the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund (RTDF) to help fund the build out of optical fibre networks and other projects in the country. The Himalayan News Service quotes NTA director Purushottam Khanal as saying that it has been three months since the RTDF, which was provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support voice over broadband projects in Nepal, has been diverted into supporting the national identity card scheme. The ADB awarded USD6 million to support voice over broadband but due to the government’s heel-dragging, no work has been undertaken in this area – which was meant to be completed by end-2014. The NTA has itself collected NPR6 billion (USD70.3 million) in RTDF payments, Khanal said, adding that it will take around NPR3.27 billion to complete the planned fibre-optic deployments.
