Bouygues hoping to be allowed to use 1800MHz for 4G

The French telco Bouygues Telecom is expecting to learn by as early as January next year whether or not it will be allowed to use its 1800MHz spectrum holdings for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE)-based services. Bouygues applied to refarm its spectrum in July this year and the country telecoms regulator Arcep is obliged to make a ruling within eight months. The proposals could face opposition from rival operators Orange France and SFR, who are complaining that it would be unfair to provide Bouygues with a simple entry into the 4G market when they had to pay large amounts for 4G-compatible frequencies.
