Ecuador’s telecoms regulator, Conatel, has awarded state-owned operator Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) spectrum which is suitable for the provision of 4G services. CNT will use 30MHz in the 700MHz band and 40MHz in the 2100MHz band to deploy LTE, and is set to become the first company in Ecuador to do so. The firm has yet to announce which vendors will help deploy the network; last month CNT selected Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei as its 3G network vendors. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, CNT is Ecuador’s dominant fixed line provider but at the end of September 2012 the company’s share of the mobile market stood at just 2.3%.
