Tunisie Telecom poised to offload Mattel stake

28 Nov 2012

Tunisie Telecom (TT) is reported to be close to selling its majority stake in Mauritanian telco Mattel which currently provides GSM-based services in the country, the news daily Jeune Afrique reports. The Tunisian carrier is known to be keen to exit the market and despite its relatively modest position – Mattel has a roughly 18% market share with 700,000 subscribers – a number of companies are thought to be keen to snap it up. Last month, TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate reported that Moroccan telecoms service provider Wana (Inwi) is interested in investing in Mattel, while France Telecom-Orange is also considering a takeover bid, having tracked the telco now for almost a year. However, the paper adds that UAE-based Etisalat is no longer interested in Mattel which was established in May 2000 and also has a number of private shareholders.
