According to unconfirmed local press reports, A1 Telekom Austria now has a total of 800 Long Term Evolution (LTE)-equipped base stations in operation across the country, giving it population coverage of around 30%. More than half of these base stations are concentrated in Vienna, which boasts 88% coverage, while Bregenz, the capital of Vorarlberg, the westernmost federal state of Austria, and Eisenstadt, the state capital of Burgenland, claim 70% and 93% coverage, respectively.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database writes that A1 has promised to deploy LTE technology in all provincial capitals and urban centres by 2015. On 1 March 2012 the carrier stole a march on its rivals when it became the first Austrian cellco to launch an LTE-suitable handset – the HTC Velocity 4G LTE. The handset supports transmission speeds of up to 100Mbps/50Mbps (down/uplink).
