22 Nov 2012

President of Niger Mahamadou Issoufou has launched the second phase of the rollout a fibre-optic network in Konni in the south of the country, reports Agence Ecofin. The first stage, which was launched in September, saw the installation of a 300km fibre-optic line between Dosso and Konni, while the second phase will link Konni and Zinder over a distance of approximately 500km. Work is being carried out by Niger’s incumbent fixed line operator Sonitel (Societe Nigerienne des Telecommunications). The government aims to increase nationwide broadband coverage from the 54% recorded in 2010 to 72% by 2015.
