South African telco Telkom has reported operating revenues of ZAR16.146 billion (USD1.822 billion) for the six months ended 30 September 2012, down slightly from ZAR16.387 billion one year earlier. Telkom reports that its operating segments consist of two separately managed business units; the ‘Fixed line’ segment provides fixed line access and data communications services, whilst the ‘Mobile’ segment accounts for mobile voice, data services and handsets sales through its ‘8ta’ unit. Fixed line revenues decreased 3.1% year-on-year to ZAR14.867 billion year-on-year while Mobile sales increased 198.3% to ZAR898 million as the service continued to gain traction.
In operational terms, fixed line telephony customers grew 5.7% to 843,491 as at 30 September, while Telkom’s ADSL broadband subscriber base increased 5.8% to 841,831. In addition, the operator reported 3,168 WiMAX subscribers, a 5.8% decrease y-o-y. Meanwhile, Telkom’s mobile unit 8ta – which launched in October 2010 – has now signed up 1.495 million active subscribers, a 50.4% rise on an annualised basis. Blended mobile ARPU increased 3.4% to ZAR68.6.
