NTC fines cellcos for failing to cut SMS rates

21 Nov 2012

Filipino industry regulator the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has ordered domestic mobile operators Smart Communications and Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc (Sun Cellular) – both units of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) – as well as Globe Telecom to reduce their SMS charge from PHP1 to PHP0.80 (USD0.024 to USD0.019) per message. The operators were required to implement the reduction from 11 December 2011 and following their failure to do so, the watchdog has further ordered them to repay customers for overcharging them. According to NTC Director Edgardo Cabarrios the three telephone firms collectively failed to pass on savings to customers from the reduced interconnection charge that had been ordered in an official NTC memo.
