According to TMT Finance, Orange Kenya is looking to sell off its 600 cell towers in Kenya, and has called for expressions of interest. The proposed leaseback agreement includes a clause in which the buyer would need to build a further 500 new sites over the course of the next few years. The move follows Orange Uganda’s sale of 300 towers to African towerco Eaton Towers in March 2012. Announcing the earlier deal, France Telecom-Orange (FT-Orange) noted that the agreement was the first of its kind signed in Africa, and would be used to gauge the effectiveness of the initiative. Were it to prove successful, the strategy would be rolled out across the French group’s other African subsidiaries.
