Macedonian mobile operator Mobilkom Macedonia (VIP Mobile), part of the Telekom Austria Group, reported positive earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of EUR1.5 million (USD1.9 million) for the July-September 2012 quarter, reversing a negative EBIT of EUR1.6 million in the corresponding period of 2011. The cellco also said earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) climbed to EUR3.8 million in 3Q12 from EUR1.1 million a year ago, on revenues that rose 9.8% year-on-year to EUR16.6 million. In its third-quarter report, Telekom Austria said that VIP’s strong revenue gains in the period were driven by higher mobile subscriptions and an increase in traffic volumes, which helped to drive returns from monthly traffic and interconnection revenues. As at 30 September VIP Mobile had a total of 626,300 mobile subscribers, up 14.2% y-o-y, helping it to consolidate its position as the second biggest player in the domestic market with a market share of 27.2%. The group also added that blended monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) declined by 4.1% to EUR8.0 as competition drove down prices.
