Network congestion prompts ban on promotions

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has banned the country’s telecoms operators from launching promotions and lotteries in a bid to ease network congestion. Local newspaper This Day cites the regulator’s director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, as saying that the ban includes all proposed and approved promotions and lotteries and ‘shall continue to remain in force until such a time as may be determined by the Commission.’ He added that the move was prompted by rising network congestion, as promotions offer more minutes during a limited period of time, while some tariffs were also below interconnect rates, resulting in anti-competitive behaviour and unfair practices by operators.
