MTS name-checks Tele2 as takeover target

Russian wireless giant Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has admitted that it is considering the potential acquisition of the local unit of Sweden’s Tele2 Group as a means of boosting growth. According to Bloomberg, chief financial officer Alexey Kornya sees further market consolidation in Russia as ‘value- accreditive’ and as such would be interested in acquiring Tele2 Russia. Earlier this year the Swedish-owned mobile operator was forced to fend off interest from state-owned Rostelecom, which made a play for the cellco after Tele2 ended up empty-handed at the government’s Long Term Evolution (LTE)-suitable frequency auction.
