The French telecoms group Iliad has reported another strong quarterly rise in the number of subscriptions to its low-cost cellular arm Free Mobile. The cellco, which launched in January this year, added 805,000 net new users in the three months to 30 September 2012 to take its total customer base to 4.405 million. Indeed, Free Mobile claimed over 60% of all net user additions in the third quarter across the entire French mobile sector, and the operator has now taken around 6.4% of the overall cellular market in terms of subscribers. Iliad also saw growth – albeit on a more modest scale – at its fixed broadband division, with 110,000 net customer adds taking its end-September total to 5.257 million.
There was also positive news on the financial front, with the strong mobile growth helping to push up third-quarter revenues by 52.6% year-on-year to EUR819.0 million (USD1.04 billion); the mobile business contributed EUR238.3 million of this figure.
