Huawei awarded USD25m Wataniya network upgrade deal

Wataniya Telecom Maldives has announced the signing of an agreement with China’s Huawei for the modernisation of the operator’s Radio Access Network (RAN). Under the USD25 million project, the vendor will upgrade Wataniya’s existing RAN with a new platform that will provide enhanced coverage across the country and better voice, data and media services. ‘This is a significant investment we have committed to for the Maldives. Once this project is completed, we will be catering to both existing and future mobile technologies including 4G,’ noted Haroon Shahul Hameed, CEO of Wataniya, while the firm’s CTO, Mounir Hasrouni, added that Wataniya’s existing 3.5G network will be upgraded to HSPA+ under the deal.
