Chinese operators shirk home grown platform

China Mobile’s domestic rivals China Unicom and China Telecom may adopt the Frequency Division Duplex Long Term Evolution (FDD-LTE) standard for their 4G networks rather than the home grown Time Division Duplex LTE (TDD-LTE) platform, reports C114 citing local media reports. Unicom, China’s sole W-CDMA provider, has begun testing FDD-based networks as the technology represents the least expensive route to 4G for the cellco, although results to-date have been ‘quite unsatisfactory’. Meanwhile, CDMA2000 operator China Telecom was also believed to be considering a transition to FDD LTE, though no further details were available.
