Investment news portal Kontan.id quotes Hasnul Suhaimi, the president and CEO of Indonesian mobile operator XL Axiata, as saying that his firm is looking to sell 8,000 of its telecoms towers for approximately IDR14 trillion (USD1.47 billion). XL Axiata currently owns and operates around 10,000 mobile towers and according to Hasnul, if the plan is realised, the cellco will hire back the use of the towers once they are sold to a third party. The cellco hopes the move will enable it to reduce operating costs and expenses related to the maintenance of the towers. The XL Axiata official estimates that the total cost of leasing the 8,000 towers will be IDR120 billion, compared to the current burden of IDR392.6 billion per annum for their repair and maintenance. The news portal links three tower firms as being interested in acquiring the assets, namely: PT Tower Joint Infrastructure, PT Tunas Solutions Pratama and PT Sarana Menara Nusantara.
