RCS&RDS scoops up smaller rival iLink

27 Sep 2012

Romania Cable Systems (RCS&RDS), the cableco controlled by enigmatic local tycoon Zoltan Teszari, has acquired smaller rival iLink, reports local newspaper Ziarul Financiar, citing a statement on iLink’s website. As part of the transaction, RCS&RDS will acquire iLink’s network assets and subscriber base of over 20,000. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that Bucharest-based telco iLink has a presence in ten cities, including: Constanta, Arges, Calarasi, Galanti, Giurgiu, Navodari, Tulcea, Teleorma. Further, iLink has international points of presence (PoPs) in Frankfurt, Amsterdam and London. It operates in both the residential and business markets through its ‘iLink Rezidential’ and ‘iLink Corporate’ units.

In a separate story, RCS&RDS is deploying 100G channels over its existing network with ECI Telecom’s ‘Apollo’ Optimised Multi-Layer Transport (OMLT) platforms. The solution will future-proof the cableco’s network to support advanced and bandwidth-hungry services and applications. The new capabilities increased network capacity tenfold, by upgrading from 10G to 100G channels, covering around 700km, from Oradea to Bucharest, with minimal changes in the network.
