China Unicom has announced it generated operating revenue of CNY121.69 billion (USD19.2 billion) in the six months ended 30 June 2012, an increase of 20.0% compared to the same period a year earlier, while service revenue grew 13.3% year-on-year to CNY102.39 billion. The growth in sales helped drive a 12.5% increase in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) to CNY36.04 billion for the first half of 2012 and a 31.9% year-on-year rise in net profit, which totalled CNY3.43 billion in 1H12. Capital expenditure reached CNY38.94 billion during the six-month period.
Accounting for 59.1% of total service revenue, sales from China Unicom’s mobile business reached CNY60.48 billion in the six months ended 30 June 2012, an increase of 23.4% over the year-ago period, of which CNY26.9 billion (44.5% of total service revenue) was generated by 3G services. Unicom’s mobile subscriber base totalled 219.249 million at 30 June 2012, an increase of 20.7% over the same period last year. The company added 17.511 million in the first half of 2012, bringing its total to 57.530 million. The GSM business meanwhile saw revenues drop by 6.3% to CNY33.58 billion, due to increasing competition and substitution by data services. The fixed segment saw broadband revenues grow by 13.0% year-on-year to CNY19.4 billion, but revenue from fixed telephony dropped by 14.7% to CNY15.07 billion. The company added 4.876 million fixed broadband subscribers, bringing the total to 60.527 million at end-June 2012.
