Econet cuts services to NetOne over interconnection fees dispute

24 Aug 2012

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced that it has cut services to NetOne. In a statement Econet claimed that the state-owned operator owes interconnection fees amounting to more than USD20 million since 2009. Econet also said that NetOne had stated earlier this month that it was not obliged to pay. ‘As a direct result of the repudiation, Econet regrets that, from Thursday 23 August, it will have no choice but to terminate all interconnection services it was providing to NetOne,’ read the statement. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Econet has more than 65% of Zimbabwe’s mobile subscriber market, while NetOne has a share of around 16%.
